Day in East London (Poppies and Whitechapel Gallery)

Looking for a cheap day out in London town?  Well there is plenty to see around the Spitafields and Brick Lane area if you’re up for a walkabout.  On a Sunday you can start at Spitafields Market if you’d like to pick up a trendy bargain.  Personally, I like to pick up a take-away glass of bubbles first at Bedales Wines for some added giggles.

Then after buying something you really didn’t need, head to Poppies Fish and Chip Shop for some truly decent fish and chips (I’m from Devon so fully qualified to judge on the subject). Hopefully it’s a nice day so you can enjoy them outside in the fresh air, as they taste much better that way.  It is the perfect spot for people watching too and as it is considered London’s fashion central, you’ll see a lot of trendies and bizarre types parading around.

As Brick Lane is nearby, it’d be rude not to go for a wander to find all the amazing street art and graffiti.  There is so much to see in the area that to list everything would take a day and I feel that it is way more fun to you to discover yourselves anyway.

If you’re not too knackered by this point, then head along Commercial Street to the Whitechapel Gallery for a small bout of free culture.  It’s a small gallery with small exhibitions so it should only take you a couple of hours to walk around, unless you are keen for some tea and cake in their cafe.  Or, if you’re feeling flush, you could skip Poppies and have lunch in their Dining Room but booking is recommended.

Try it and tell me you didn’t have fun!  Go on, I dare ya!

About Hayles

Living in and loving London, I like to cram in as much as possible. I have a lot of different hobbies which I start on a whim and most of the time abandon for something else! My current interests include film, TV, music, comedy, art, photography, theatre and finding new yummy food establishments. Mostly I just love to experience the many joys and wonders that London offers. I started this blog to help me remember what I've actually done at the end of each year, but now I actually really enjoy writing and sharing what I hope is funny and/or useful information.

  1. For people going down Brick Lane looking for street art, be certain to visit the Grey Eagle Car Park just west of Brick Lane through the Old Truman Brewery complex – it has the best large installation street art you can find.
